Lottie's Landing Gear Adventures with Safran!

Hey, everyone! I'm Lottie, and I had the coolest adventure exploring the world of landing gear! I went on a big tour to some amazing places, and I want to tell you all about it!

First, I visited Gloucester MRO. It's a place where they fix and take care of landing gear parts. I saw the Bushing Machinist area, and guess what? I got to try out the machines there! It was so much fun.

Then, I went to the paint shop at MRO. The colors and all the neat tools they use to make the landing gears not only look awesome but protected from damage, were really cool.

After that, I zoomed off to Safran Landing Systems across the road. This place has been making landing gear for planes for a super long time, like more than 85 years! I learned so much fun stuff here. My favorite part of the tour was seeing the heat treatment. They showed me something called 'quenching.' It's when they heat up the landing gear super hot, like 870 degrees, and then they dip it into hot oil. It makes flames! So cool!
I also visited the place where they make parts for A350 and A320 Landing Gear. Those parts were taller than me!
Then, I saw the 'One Shop,' where they drill and shape parts using diamond-tipped drills. They even use water to keep the parts from getting too hot. Smart, right?

The most exciting part was going to an airshow! I saw the landing gear in action on the planes. It was amazing to see how these important parts work!

I had a busy, but super fun day. I learned about lots of different jobs I could do, from fixing parts to assembling landing gear. Safran is all about making aviation safer and more sustainable. I had the chance to chat with our engineers, and they told me all about our mission to make flying better for everyone.
It was such a special day, seeing how everything comes together to make landing gear work. Safran at Gloucester does so much – from designing and testing to fixing and supporting over 80,000 landings every single day! It's incredible!

This year, the team at Frazer-Nash are delighted to be joined by Lottie, as part of the WES annual ‘Lottie Tour’. We are looking forward to showing Lottie the variety and excitement provided by a career in engineering with Frazer-Nash.
Last year, Lottie toured our Bristol office, before discussing complex challenges during a team briefing. She learnt about Our Tide, a charity to promote tidal energy in the Bristol and southwest region that several Frazer-Nash colleagues volunteer to support and she learnt all about the recent educational workshops run over the summer.
She also accompanied some of our engineers on a visit to Hinkley Point B to learn more about nuclear engineering. At Frazer-Nash, we provide innovative solutions across the entire nuclear lifecycle, from the design of new nuclear technologies through to the safe decommissioning of existing nuclear assets - in support of a low carbon future and the drive towards net zero emissions.
To celebrate Tomorrow’s Engineers Week 2023, we will continue to show Lottie the variety of projects the team at Frazer-Nash work on. This year, some of the exciting work she will be supporting includes:
  • Learning about Iron Stallion, a fully automated system for Space Traffic Management,
  • Attending the Kings Fund Conference, 2023, to hear about how Frazer-Nash supports the health and care industry now and for the future,
  • A trip to Paris attending a EUROCAE training course on Cyber Security for airworthiness,
  • Visiting our partner Space Solar, to understand more about their mission  to create an era-defining new solar energy source from space, and their programmes to support the development and commercialisation of Space-Based Solar Power, an affordable, scalable clean energy technology.
Our teams work on many different projects across varied industries, and there is a great deal to show Lottie about what life at Frazer-Nash is really like. To find out more about our work visit www.fnc.co.uk

Empowering diversity in engineering: Fugro's continued support for WES Lottie Tour in 2023

Caroline Williams of Fugro tells us why the global Geo-data leader can’t wait to host another Lottie Tour as a 2023 sponsor.
By the 1841 census of Great Britain, over 100 women were listed as working in engineering.
Fast forward two centuries and gender diversity and equal opportunity in engineering has changed beyond all recognition.
From space travel to tunnel building and the urgent challenges of climate change and net zero, growing numbers of female engineers and scientists are shaping our future and a better world. Almost one million women now work as engineers, accounting for about a sixth of all engineering jobs in the UK.
But work is still needed to embed gender equity and diversity in the engineering workplace. Crucial to this is inspiring young people to study and embrace STEM subjects, and dismantling misconceptions and barriers that deter female progression in this dynamic career space.
It’s just one reason Fugro is delighted to be sponsoring the brilliant and influential WES Lottie Tour for a second year.
In 2022, we hosted four Lottie dolls at our UK operations to see how STEM disciplines are involved in our specialism – Geo-data. From metocean surveys for offshore projects to soil testing in the lab, they learnt how we investigate and assess land and marine sites for the development of energy, transport and utilities infrastructure; also for flood management, land remediation, environmental projects, structural monitoring, and much more.
This year we’re scaling up and sending out 14 intrepid Lotties across Europe and Africa to explore how Fugro is contributing to our mission of ‘a safer, liveable world’.
They’ll watch women geophysicists, geotechnical engineers, geochemists, data analysts, marine and environmental consultants working on important innovations, helping to counter the impacts of climate change.
Our Geo-data is used to secure electricity networks from storm risks; to build offshore wind farms with thousands of wind turbines; to maintain rail networks for safe, on-time train services; to map flood and earthquake risks to protect businesses and communities.
One lucky Lottie will also visit a Fugro remote operations centre (ROC). From these high tech, onshore control hubs, we maximise the use of remote and autonomous techniques to survey faster and more efficiently offshore. All while removing personnel from health and safety risks and reducing carbon footprint.
Our Lottie campaign last year was well received throughout the business and had high engagement across our social media platforms.
We see this as a sign of the desire and momentum for change within the engineering sector and the pivotal efforts of industry bodies like WES in championing women and the diversity agenda.
So, here's to an even bigger and better Lottie Tour in 2023!
